There has been quite a lot of talk about minimalism & capsule wardrobes over the past couple of years. Although I am a fan of this movement towards a more simple way of being, I think the concept requires some clarification.
For me, this is not about having only…say 20 to 30 pieces of clothing each season or only enough dishes and utensils for each family member. Rather it is about refining so that the only items you have are the ones you absolutely love. It is not about numbers. It is about love and joy! Seriously. I know it sounds a little corny, but it is true. I promise.
Here is a great example! Any of you who follow my instagram know I’m crazy for fur babies. Most people I talk to think having four is excessive and would probably say it is neither simple nor in line with practicing a minimalist life style. Go ahead. Chime in…I can take it. You are thinking…yeah, ok crazy lady you say less is more…how bout less fur! less vacuuming! less noise! Hahaha! Here is the thing though…both cats and both dogs bring me so much fulfillment and I couldn’t love them more. I chose them, I chose animal rescue over other things that may have taken up my time and energy. I chose them because, for me, they are pure joy.
If you take one thing away from this post, I want it to be the idea that we all must fill our lives with what we truly love. This, my friends, is how we feel satisfied with less. It applies to everything really. Clothes, decor, activities, friends…
Let’s talk about how this applies to style. Would you believe me if I told you that the more clothes we have, the less we actually wear any of them? It’s true. When our closet is overflowing, it usually isn’t jam packed with pieces we love. It’s more like standing in the eye of a confusion storm with no refuge. If you are feeling like this when trying to get dressed, then it is time for a wardrobe overhaul. Only keep what you absolutely love and slowly…very intentionally… build on that.
Stay tuned for a step by step post on how to clean out your closet and figure out what exactly is your personal style happy place! I want to make this post as helpful as possible for you. So please let me know any questions you have or specific things you would like me to focus on. You can leave me a comment or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org
* just a few things to note:
I cut this pair of Levis for a slightly cropped, raw hem look.
I had to put a stitch at the base of the v neck on this top so it wouldn’t gape open. Now it is perfect.
My slides are sold out in black on the website, but lighter colors are still available. This is my first pair of Nisolo shoes and I’m very please with the quality and the brand philosophy.
